MILLS ISSUES STATEMENT ON CAMPUS SAFETY 

Oakland, CA - A Mills student suffered an alleged sexual assault on Thursday, December 7, 2006. The student had met the alleged perpetrator online, in response to a potential job opportunity. After the incident, the student moved quickly and courageously to notify the police and Mills public safety officials about the attack and aided in finding the alleged perpetrator, thus helping to prevent this attacker from harming others.

Oakland, CA - Yiyun Li, assistant professor of English at Mills College, has received this year's Guardian first book award. Designed to recognize the finest new literary talent, the award was given for A Thousand Years of Good Prayers, Li’s collection of short stories set in and around China.

MILLS COLLEGE PRESENTS LANDSCAPE HERITAGE LECTURE SERIES 
Getty Foundation Grant Supports Presentations by Three Landscape Experts 
Oakland, CA - Beginning Wednesday, October 11, 2006, Mills College will present a series of three lectures on the College’s landscape heritage, supported by a grant from the Getty Foundation. Mills was recently selected by the Getty Foundation to receive a 2006 Campus Heritage grant. One of only 13 2006-Campus Heritage recipients nationwide, Mills is using the grant to fund the College’s landscape heritage master plan* documenting the campus from its 19th century origins to the present. The plan will include Mills’ cultural landscape, nationally prominent architecture, and continuing commitment to innovative women’s education.

MILLS COLLEGE DEBUTS MASTER’S DEGREE IN PUBLIC POLICY 

Oakland, CA -  Mills College announced today a new Master’s Degree in Public Policy (MPP) designed to prepare women for engaged policy work and public leadership on behalf of social change. According to program director Carol Chetkovich, the new graduate program will “produce professionals prepared for positions of public influence that consider the complex social, economic, and cultural factors affecting societal problems.”

NATIONAL PUBLIC RADIO SELECTS MILLS COLLEGE STUDENTS TO CREATE RADIO FEATURE ON GENERATION GAP 

Oakland, CA - Five Mills College students have been selected by KALW-FM and National Public Radio (NPR) to work with professional broadcast journalists on a week-long radio feature. NPR's Next Generation training project in conjunction with KALW-FM will bring seasoned journalists to Mills October 9–13, 2006, to work one-on-one with students to create a multi-part broadcast story. This year, the students chose the theme of "the generation gap" for their stories to be broadcast on NPR affiliate KALW (91.7 FM) later this year.

Oakland, CA - Mills College has been selected among the top 50 colleges for African Americans, according to Black Enterprise magazine (September 2006). Mills was ranked 31st based on a survey of 500 African American higher educational professionals including presidents, chancellors, and directors of student affairs assessing social and academic environments for African American students at U.S. colleges and universities.

Oakland, CA - Mills College is one of the country’s top institutions offering students an outstanding undergraduate education, according to The Princeton Review’s annual guide, The Best 361 Colleges (2007, Random House / Princeton Review). MILLS WOMEN ROCK SF GIANTS TO SHUT OUT DIAMONDBACKS

Oakland, CA -  Mills first-year students from the class of 2010 rocked the San Francisco Giants on to a 5–0 victory over the Arizona Diamondbacks on Monday, August 21, 2006. Attending the baseball game at San Francisco’s AT&T Park as part of orientation activities, they joined approximately 38,000 people in the stadium and millions of viewers at home who saw two Mills-related messages on the Giants’ Jumbotron.

College Selected 16th Among Nation’s Liberal Arts Colleges for Diversity

Oakland, CA - Mills College ranked among the country’s top 100 liberal arts institutions in America’s Best Colleges 2006,  published today by U.S. News & World Report. The liberal arts college rankings emphasize undergraduate education and institutions awarding a minimum of half of their degrees in liberal arts disciplines. There are 215 liberal arts colleges in the country; 193 are private institutions, and 22 are public.

Oakland, CA - The Washington Monthly College Rankings (September 2006) has named Mills College one of the country’s leading liberal arts colleges.  Ranked 36 of 202 institutions, Mills was highly rated based on the College’s community service, research spending, quality of preparation for graduate education, and social mobility. The category of social mobility is based on the graduation rate, given the institution’s percentage of Pell Grant recipients and average SAT scores.

Spring Concert will air Sunday, June 25 at 10 am 
Oakland, CA - The Mills College Performing Group’s spring concert will be broadcast on KALW 91.7 FM as part of their “Performances at 10” series. The broadcast will air Sunday, June 25 at 10 am. The concert took place in the Concert Hall on the Mills College campus on April 8, 2006. Highlights of the concert include Morton Feldman’s The King of Denmark; John Cage’s Four6; and original compositions from Mills Music Department faculty Fred Frith and Steed Cowart.

Five Movies on Love and Betrayal to Screen June 20-August 6, 2006
Oakland, CA - The Mills College Art Museum will present five films this summer spanning 50 years of Bollywood cinema: Lajja (2001), Henna (1991), Dostana (1980), Guide (1965), and Mr. and Mrs. 55 (1955). Curated by Mary-Ann Milford Lutzker, provost and dean of the Mills faculty, the films explore the epic themes of love and betrayal.

MILLS TRUSTEE LAUREN SPEETH IS FEATURED VIOLIN SOLOIST IN COASTSIDE COMMUNITY ORCHESTRA 

Oakland, CA - Lauren Speeth, Mills Trustee, performs as violin soloist on Saturday, May 13 at 8 pm at the Coastside Community Theatre in Half Moon Bay, California. The Coastside Community Orchestra began as a small group of local musicians who shared a common dream of a non-professional orchestra that would enhance their community. What began as a handful of enthusiastic players in 1983 is now a multi-talented orchestra of over forty musicians.

IN MEMORIAM: MILLS ALUMNA TANYA NEIMAN

Oakland, CA - With great sadness, Mills College announces the death of Tanya Neiman, alumna (Class of 1970) on February 27, 2006, following a long battle with ovarian cancer. Neiman was a well-known figure in the San Francisco legal community who worked vigorously to improve access to justice for members of low-income communities.

Oakland, CA - Jade Snow Wong (also known as Constance Wong Ong), internationally acclaimed author and ceramicist, and Phi Beta Kappa graduate of Mills College, died on Thursday, March 16, 2006 at the age of 84. She served on the Board of Governors of the Mills College Alumnae Association from 1945-49, and received an honorary Doctor of Humane Letters from the College in 1976.

Oakland, CA - Oscar-nominated actress Gloria Stuart, who played Old Rose in the 1997 movie Titanic, is planning to give Mills College important printing equipment and materials including a rare typeface from her private studio in Los Angeles. A printer and book artist with art in major collections worldwide, the 95 year-old Stuart intends to donate a Vandercook Press, a rare run of Eve typeface, and archive materials as a bequest to Mills’ Book Arts program.

MILLS COLLEGE RECEIVES $7.4 MILLION GIFT FROM GIBBS ESTATE

Oakland, CA - Mills College has received a major gift of $7.4 million from the estate of Eileen Mitchell Gibbs, an alumna from the Class of 1936. A former resident of Colfax, CA, Gibbs was an avid outdoorswoman who lived her entire life in the Sierra Nevada Mountains. Upon her death in 2004 at the age of 89, she bequeathed much of her estate to Mills, leaving an exceptional legacy supporting several high priority programs.
