MILLS PROFESSOR CARLOTA CAULFIELD PRESENTS LECTURE AT UNIVERSITY COLLEGE LONDON 

Oakland, CA - Carlota Caulfield, professor of Spanish and Spanish-American Studies at Mills College, will present a lecture at the University College London (UCL) on “Visual Poetry in Barcelona.” Offered by the Institute of Germanic and Romance Studies’ (IGRS) Imagined City Seminar Series, the event will take place on Tuesday, December 5, 2006.

Caulfield is currently a visiting fellow at the IGRS and a visiting professor at UCL (autumn 2006).

She will illustrate her talk with references to the work of Xavier Canals, J.M. Calleja and Gustavo Vega. Caulfield will also explore women's involvement in the creation of Visual Poetry through the work of Teresa Hereu, Montserrat Felip, Montserrat Ramoneda, Fina Miralles, Eugènia Balcells, Cuca Canals, María Mercè Marçal and Carme Riera. 

Caulfield has enjoyed international success as a poet. She is the author of nine poetry books written in Spanish and English, including The Book of Giulio Camillo (a model for a theater of memory) and Movimientos met á licos para juguetes abandonados, which won the 2002 First Hispanoamerican Prize 'Dulce Mar í a Loynaz'. She is the editor of From the Forbidden Garden. Letters from Alejandra Pizarnik (2003) and The Other Poetry of Barcelona. Spanish and Spanish-American Women Poets (2004).

Her research interests include the avant-garde and interdisciplinary approaches to art and poetry. Her poems, essays, and reviews have appeared in newspapers and journals in Latin America, Europe and the United States. From 1998 to 2002, Caulfield was the editor of CORNER, an electronic online journal dedicated to the avant-garde.
