MILLS COLLEGE TO HOST MAJOR FORUM FOR DIVERSITY IN GRADUATE EDUCATION 1,000 Attendees Expected on Saturday, October 28, 2006
Oakland, CA - More than 1,000 students from underrepresented populations and graduate school recruiters from 103 colleges and universities nationwide are expected to attend the “2006 Northern California Forum for Diversity in Graduate Education” at Mills College on Saturday, October 28, 2006.
The Forum is a significant initiative encouraging students from underrepresented groups to consider graduate studies that can lead to college and university teaching and research. The day-long program will inform students about the academic and career opportunities associated with advanced study in a wide range of disciplines.
The Council of Graduate Schools recently reported that the number of African Americans enrolled in graduate programs increased by six percent in 2005, and first-time Hispanic enrollment increased by ten percent. However, the majority of graduate students in California and nationwide are Caucasian or Asian.
“Hosting this major Forum demonstrates Mills’ continuing commitment to the full educational advancement of students of color,” said Marianne Sheldon, associate provost of graduate studies at Mills. This year, approximately 37 percent of Mills graduate students are students of color; seven percent identify themselves as multi-ethnic.
The Forum will feature a plenary session with keynote speaker Stephanie Fryberg, assistant professor of psychology at the University of Arizona, tables with graduate school recruiters, and workshops on topics such as:
- How to select the right graduate school
- How to prepare for, and apply to graduate school
- How to prepare for the Graduate Record Exam
- Sources of funding for graduate school
- Keys to success and survival in graduate school
In addition, discipline-based workshops will offer information about a wide range of academic areas including:
- Physical sciences and mathematics
- Engineering and computer science
- Life sciences
- Nursing and the allied health fields
- Behavioral sciences
- Education
- Humanities and arts
- Business and finance (PhD level only)
Held twice a year, once in Northern California and once in Southern California, the Forum offers attendance by invitation only. Students are selected by their home campuses based on their grade point average, promise of success in graduate studies, and faculty recommendations. They must be a member of a group underrepresented in graduate education (i.e. first generation college student, economically disadvantaged background, student of color), and either a sophomore, junior or senior college student, or a candidate for a master’s degree.
The California Forum for Diversity receives financial support from the California State University (CSU) Pre-Doctoral Program, the CSU Chancellor’s Doctoral Incentive Program, the University of California Office of the President, campuses hosting the Forum, the National Science Foundation through the CSU Louis Stokes Alliance for Minority Participation Phase III Grant, and The Princeton Review.
