Improving the Bow Tie: African-American Improvisational Quilts
This exhibition features the art of 10 African-American quilt-makers who have made colorful works that are based on the popular bow-tie pattern. Drawn from the Collection of Eli Leon, these quilts are examples of an
artistic tradition based in African and African-American cultures.

Second to the Gods: Recent gifts from the Collection of William K. Ehrenfeld M.D.
These three small exhibitions of African art are selected from a recent gift of over 800 works of art given to the Mills College Art Museum. The exhibitions, curated by Mills College students are:
Royal Regalia of the Yoruba (An exhibition of crowns and cornets of the Yoruba as well as a rare set of 19th century beaded garments worn by a Yoruba king.)
The Seat of Power (An exhibition of thrones, chairs and stools from West Africa.)
Fertility (An exhibition of objects that are related to fertility and women in Africa.)

Oakland Picture Lady: Traci Bartlow
Oakland based artist and choreographer Tracie Bartlow will create an installation with her photographs. The images, taken in the 98th Avenue neighborhood in East Oakland and of the emerging Hip-Hop music scene in the 1990s, show the dynamic nature of the people and musicians of the City of Oakland. The artist Lauren Benjamin will be assisting Bartlow on the installation.

Spike: Keba Konte
Oakland based artist Keba Konte will create a monumental portrait of his mother on the side of a 20” high cargo shipping container. His mother, Pam Borrelli, was longshorewoman at the Port of Oakland in the
1980’s. During this period, Borrelli was affectionately known as “Spike” by her co-workers.
