The public radio courses introduce students to the principles of public interest journalism and the craft of audio story telling. At the same time, they allow students to delve into contemporary social issues and create original reports for broadcast. Past courses have focused on development in Oakland and public education reform. The introductory class teaches students the basics of journalism and radio reporting, while also providing a survey on Oakland's history and contemporary social issues. The intermediate class allows continuing students to delve into issue in depth during the semester and create original documentary reports for broadcast. Students can also be placed in reporting internships and produce advanced documentaries for broadcast through public radio reporting at Mills.

Social Science 112: Intermediate Public Radio Reporting Spring, 2009: West Oakland: Documenting the Downturn
Historic West Oakland is home to some of the oldest parts of the city. Its elegant Victorians and gritty industrial warehouses tell the story of this working class town. In many ways, this part of the city never recovered from previous economic downturns and the residents have often had to rely on ingenuity and each other to survive. So, we thought it would be an interesting barometer during the current economic crisis. Our series explores how the neighborhood is responding to current —and past—challenges.
