Although women make up 55 percent of undergraduate enrollment and more than half the workforce across the nation, they represent only 35 percent of business school students and hold only 16.4 percent of corporate officer positions.* The Lorry I. Lokey Graduate School of Business was created to address the underrepresentation of women in graduate business education and business leadership through programs designed to give women every opportunity to equal men in achievement throughout their lives.
The business world is rapidly transforming, placing a premium on employees who can solve problems creatively, drive innovation, adapt to change, and communicate clearly. Integrity, collaboration, and strategic thinking are essential. At Mills, we focus on developing women's abilities to flourish in this dynamic new business environment.
To prepare women for positions of leadership, the Lokey Graduate School of Business:
- incorporates special teaching tools to develop students' quantitative skills, thus opening paths to financial management and CEO positions;
- focuses on social entrepreneurship, corporate responsibility, and ethical leadership, increasingly essential for successful nonprofit organizations and for-profit businesses. Mills stands at the forefront of business education with an endowed course in Ethics, Leadership, and Entrepreneurship;
- offers a wide range of core graduate courses and electives, many of which address topics of special interest to women, such as nonprofit management and women and business;
- draws upon relationships with Mills alumnae and other successful women leaders to connect students with role models, mentors, and networks in the business community—all essential resources for our graduates as they advance in their careers; and
- provides a full-time career services staff and a supportive environment to identify internship opportunities, to establish mentoring relationships, and to develop skills for resume development, job searches, and interviews. Through individual career counseling, workshops, career fairs, special guest speakers, and networking events, our graduates are well prepared to be responsible business leaders of the future.
