Professional Survival Weekend
Sunday November 23, 2008
9:30 am–4:00 pm

Each year, The Place for Writers presents a Professional Survival Weekend, dedicated to helping MA and MFA students transition from their graduate study to professional life. Writers, editors, publishers, teachers, and alumnae discuss a variety of publishing opportunities, careers in teaching and academia, and other information useful to emerging writers and scholars.

In fall 2008, Professional Survival Weekend will take place in the Mills Hall Living Room and classrooms. The event will be free and open to the public to encourage wider networking opportunities for students.

This year’s panels will include information on publishing fiction, creative nonfiction and poetry, teaching in and out of academia, building your C.V. and how to go D.I.Y. by self-publishing, starting a reading series or magazine. Attendees will also have a chance to meet with agents about pitching their books.

Speakers include Elmaz Abinader, Chad Arnold, Mary Burger, Joshua Clover, Emma Shaw Crane, Steve Dickison, Felicia Eth from Felicia Eth Literary Representation, Tomás Galguera, David Harrison Horton, Scott Inguito, Kevin Killian, Aya de Leon, Jennifer Mattson from Andrea Brown Literary Agency, Anh-Hoa Thi Nguyen, Edissa Nichols, Cornelia Nixon, Elise Proulx from Frederick Hill Bonnie Nadell Agency, Carolina de Robertis, John Sakkis, Juliana Spahr, Aimee Suzara, Michelle Tea and Kara Wittman.
