Sculpture
Space is limited. Workshop sign-up sheets are posted in the Sculpture Building Studio on the tool room door (sign-up is not required for the orientations).
Basic Orientation
The Basic Orientation is a short introduction to standard shop policies and expectations with the shop Technician. Presence at an orientation is required of any student interested in attending any of the following workshops.

Table Saw Intensive
The table saw is perhaps the most versatile tool in any woodshop but is also one of the more dangerous and intimidating. In this workshop we will focus on the table saw, what it can do and what it can’t, how to use it safely and what can go wrong. We will discuss jigs that make specific cuts more safe, easy and accurate, work with the dado set and go over more advanced operations (bevel cuts, rabbets, etc).

Spray Booth: Introduction to Spray Finishing Techniques
This workshop will cover the safe and proper use of the spray booth and the spray guns. We will cover techniques to get a good surface, problems to look

Welding 101: Oxy/Acetylene
In this workshop we will cover the basics of oxy-acetylene welding. We will go over welding theory, metal preparation and safety. By the end of the workshop, students will be comfortable setting up and shutting down the gas system, running beads and performing basic welds.

Welding 101: MIG
In this workshop we will cover the basics of the MIG welding system. We will go over welding theory, metal preparation and safety. By the end of the workshop, students will be comfortable setting up and shutting down the welding system, running beads and performing basic welds.

Torch-cutting with Oxy/Acetylene and Plasma
This workshop covers the basics of torch cutting steel with both the Oxy/acetylene torch and the plasma torch. We will go over cutting theory and safety procedures. By the end of the workshop, students will be comfortable setting up and shutting down the two systems and performing cuts and will be familiar with the benefits and drawback of each system.
Prerequisite: Welding 101: Oxy/Acetylene

Photography
All photography workshops will be held on Fridays, beginning at 1:00 pm and will run two to three hours, as necessary. Workshops will be conducted in either Rm 153 (Digital Lab), Rm 141 (Critique Room) or the Prieto Lab.
Digital Lab Basic Orientation
This workshop will focus on printmaking in the Mills Digital Lab. We will cover the software and procedures necessary to prepare files for printing on the Epson 7600 and 9600 photo printers. Also covered will be an introduction to flat bed scanning.
Estimated Length: 2 hrs. Attendance is required in order to use the Digital Lab.

Photoshop Basics (CS4)
Photoshop is the de facto tool of the digital darkroom. In this workshop we will begin with the basics, first learning how to set up the working environment for proper color management. Next we will introduce the various tools, palates and windows. We will then explore some of the basic concepts crucial in understanding non destructive image manipulation in the digital environment, such as layers and adjustment layers.
Prerequisites: None.

Tethered Digital Capture
Digital photography offers distinct advantages to studio and location work. In this workshop we will explore one of those advantages: tethered capture – allowing us to shoot, then almost immediately evaluate critical aspects of the shot (exposure, sharpness, depth of field, gray balance, etc.). Using Canon cameras and software, an Apple notebook and Adobe Lightroom we will learn to construct a remote capture setup, suitable for studio or location photography.
Prerequisites: Photoshop Basics (or demonstrated equivalent competence).

Intro to Color Management
The workshop will cover the basic – and most important – concepts of color management. We will talk about why color management is so important in the current world of digital imaging and we will discuss the issues color management attempts to solve. We will go over the tools used to measure and compare color and we will develop device profiles (for monitors, printers and scanners).
Prerequisites: Photoshop Basics (or demonstrated equivalent competence).

More Photoshop (CS4)
In More Photoshop we will build on the information covered in Photoshop Basics. There are dozens of ways to accomplish any task in Photoshop and we will explore some of the myriad ways of gaining control over our images. We will explore curves, selective color and some advanced masking techniques and blend modes.
Prerequisites: Photoshop Basics (or demonstrated equivalent competence)

Blurb Book Making
In this workshop we will cover the basic concepts required to create a custom book using the Blurb bookmaking service. We will use Adobe InDesign software to design, layout and export a book as a PDF. We will go over the basics of layout using InDesign and discuss the proper handling of placed images, to include file size, resolution, sharpening and color management.
